Meme Essay: Criminology Students

Meme Essay Thumbnail

There is a recent trend in the Philippines side of facebook to dunk on criminologists. I came across a few posts about crim students saying that they do not know how to use a computer, gmail, or make a powerpoint presentation. Pretty funny not gonna lie. There has been a discourse and became a popular trend to make fun of them. Seems like every other college course-taker are dunking on them. In this “Meme essay”, where i to talk about memes, and how i feel and think about them, i will try to give light on the subject. And we are starting off with criminology students.

Criminology is a college course, for students who want to learn about laws and fight crimes. The job opportunity for criminology students are police, security, law enforcers, and other profession that is related to crimes, and laws.

There have been a few memes that i saw which became like the focus on why criminology students were ridiculed. This post is the first meme i saw which mentioned crim students:

Memes i found related to the topic

It’s a fun jab about college students using their parent’s money to gamble online, while also singing Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” Parody. There is a heavy gambling pandemic going on here and personally, i dont know if the majority of crim students do gamble. I have no close friends who are crim students right now to confirm this, so i thought the idea of mentioning the student as a crim and it student seems like the 2 most fitting. Maybe because IT and Criminology are considered more of a lax course and the courses chosen by students who have no idea to take on college, heavily on IT, less on criminology.

This video became trending because of the student who posted his video reciting what he prompted on the chatgpt, allegedly, i have not seen the original video. This seems like he wanted to answer truthfully, but backfired. If he would reply to the question by the sender, he could have just plan on what to say instead of using AI. Yes i like AI, but in his context, saying what’s on your mind is the right choice.

This one is just Criminology Review Center being horny on main. This is one of the reason they meme on criminology students; the abundance of horniness and brashness of the students. Since most of the students are male, this could affect how they are as a person. But coming back to the topic, a page for Reviewing should not be posting these types of contents. It’s job is to announce upcoming schedules and what nots. If the page admin is also a criminology student, bachelor, then it does look bad for their course and the students, and might become a stigma for the criminology student that will last for thousands of years.

The Problem

Here is what is saw the cause of the conversation why Crim students are teased: Horniness, Lack is decency and respect from others, computer and Digital skills.

Male dominated spaces tend to be rough for others, it is more literal, the humor can be seen as low brow, indecent, and yes, sex jokes are said every minute. And since Criminology is a male-dominated course, that tends to be the norm, from what I am seeing. Being porn addicted can affect how you think of your preferred mate gender. Thinking about ladies in a lewd way most of your time, could make you objectify them in real life. You might come of as sexist, creep, or weirdo. Maybe the worst part is you might not want anything to do with the other sex and just be addicted watching others do the deed, making you ineffective in mating.

Does this apply to criminology students? Maybe for the few, but since criminology seems strict, this could affect their relationship status.

Lack of decency is also addressed in some comments in Facebook. Saying that they tend to be rude in person. Maybe the use of power is part of this conversation as well, since their course is related to power in real life, physical power. These students could be police when they graduate, and in the Philippines, there are cops who use their position to benefit themselves, in some ways that are not ethical. And online, well… Some of them threaten others of killing, bullying, and harassing them.

Lastly, Computer and Digital skills are what they lack, as per the netizens said. Why I personally don't think all of them are illiterate digitally, the majority seems to be not that good in making word files to pdf, printing screenshots instead of the text, and using mail services is a myth to them.

The Other Side

Now that we have talked about the problem at hand, let's see the other side of the situation. What do the netizens know about crim students? Is it just a meme and nothing else, or they have hard evidence about those memes?

Based on facebook, the crim memes are trending through facebook pages, that is just for fun. And the commenters on said fb pages do share some experience that they have with said students.

Some confirm the allegations about crim students, either by what their close friends said who are also in criminology, and their own experiences. This confirms that the memes hold matter. From the perspective of others, that assumption does show in the criminology students. Since they are gonna be the future law enforcers, netizens fear that crim students would not reach the proper enforcers they could be. They fear that crim students would utilize their power to serve their own self rather than to serve the community, which would lead to their corruption. With the unjust use of power, we can not change our country, since the would-be enforcers are against the common folks.

The Solution

Ofcourse, it’s all fun and games, it is just a meme after all. But i still want to give a solution. It’s just that I need things to have an explanation, you get me?

My advice for the criminology students who are hurt or affected, is mentioned in said memes, listen and learn. Or not haha who cares.

If you are a student who is not tech-savvy, learn how these applications work. Learn the basics, you might use it in the future. Even though you are not obliged to use them in your profession, therefore you should not use them. Be open to try these applications since we are in a technology age, and most devices require basic understanding of how these said devices work.

For the lusty students, control yourself. I know it is hard since you are young, your hormones are very high and active. The sooner you stop masturbating and sexualizing anything will lead too a healthy you and your future. Try to watch porn less, don’t be openly horny online, it affects how people see you. Try to see yourself as a person of dignity, protect your status since this affects your mind and body.

And for the students who will seek power for self-gain only, I suggest being more open to others. Try to be open-minded, think first before doing any malicious comebacks. It is not worth it. You might trample on someone who hurt you, but that anger, negative emotion could change the fate of your life. There have been a few instances that the type of people which gets easily angered, cannot think logically and push themselves to hurt others physically, which could make you use your power for malice.

Conclusion

Making fun of Crim students is nothing at the end of the day. The memes made by othersare just memes, unless it affects you very hard. To be hurt is human, but learning to take criticisms and jokes are part of being human as well. So to the criminology students out there who are affected with said memes, keep your head high. Prove to yourself that you are capable, and a competent student, and a fair person. Also, is it true that you don’t know how to save word files as pdf?
